Feel your fire

The last of my element-themed classes will be focused on fire, which is associated with the Solar Plexus chakra, Manipura. So, if you’re coming to class on Monday, be prepared for a core workout.

When I think about fire, I think about the negativity that is often surrounded with fiery emotions. As a society, we are conditioned to minimize these emotions. We label anger as a “bad feeling” and passion as something that should be pushed aside in order to fulfill responsibilities or fit into a specific mold for what a human should do and be.

But what if we reframed this and instead allowed these feelings to lead us towards our most authentic lives? Because whether we are inspired, excited, stimulated, or angry, at the core of these emotions is a dominant reaction. What is it that really makes you feel something? This can tell you everything.

While it is important to lean into these feelings, it is equally important to avoid becoming consumed by them. Fire is powerful, and when this power is thoughtfully harnessed it unlocks confidence, motivation, and a sense of purpose. However, impulsively acting on our feelings without understanding the “why?” behind them causes us to become aggressive and controlling. And, ignoring our feelings altogether will make us become resentful and lack a strong sense of direction.

How can we gain insight into our deepest selves through fire? First, we need to pay attention to the feelings that come up in our day-to-day lives. What is it that triggers us? Are there common themes?

An example of this is that a few years ago I noticed myself feeling triggered by women who were particularly outspoken. I didn’t know why I felt that way, but after processing my feelings I realized that I actually admired this quality and felt angry at myself for being too nervous to speak out in certain situations. So, I decided that I would start making an effort to speak my mind in a way that felt genuine to me. After putting this in practice, I noticed that I felt happier and that each time I spoke up it became easier and easier.

Feel your fire, and act on it once you’re ready. You might be surprised at where it takes you.
